Scout closes her eyes, and within minutes, her lips are twitching, Then all four legs paddle as if she’s chasing a rabbit, romping in the woods, or running toward home.
By all appearances it would look like my dogs indeed dreamed. Chasing squirrels, likely. Even barking sometimes, though the bark was very high pitched; not the regular bark.
I hope dogs dream. And I hope Bella's dreams are full of mountains and trails and glacial lakes and road trips and road burgers. Because if they are, then I've done an OK job by her.
While I have decided not to own any more pets in my lifetime, your article brings fond memories of watching my dogs and cats do all those crazy things. Is there really anything more humorous to watch than to see our furry friends on some kind of fun juant while they're snoozing?
Thank you for being you and bringing joy into my life today!
I’ve seen a wide array of dreaming patterns and behavior among my dogs. I had one sweet, traumatized girl who experience full-on nightmares. Another dog was a tail wagger. A dog who was taken off his mom too early suckled in his sleep. My current buddy runs, growls, yips and sometimes even howls. He also eats imaginary treats! I see entire stories play out in dog dreams. Yes, of course they dream!
I’ve come to think of dreams as echoes of waking life (not premonitions). Seems the same for my dogs, although I doubt they ever considered the idea of a premonition. Good question!

What a cute-filled post. We all love those little twitches and snorts as they sleep.
My beagle used to wag his tail vigorously and often howled or bayed in his sleep. He was clearly dreaming of hunting critters!
My golden/chow-chow/German shepherd/border collie mix isn't as vocal when she's dreaming; but I see her paws twitching like she's running.
Our dogs cover a lot of ground, waking and sleeping. Happy dreams.
Yes they dream. I think of running around in fields if my Dad’s Labs paws are anything to go by!
When my dog is in a deep sleep and dreaming I know he is relaxed and free from pain/discomfort or stress and that brings me immense joy.
Oh yes. Even our little senior dachshund dreams. We think he’s dreaming of being a big dog.

Thank you, Dr. Nancy!

Yes, I do think dogs dream. I’ve seen mine bark, twitch and even wag the tail.
