Roo!
Approximately one month ago, I answered a video call from my daughter. In a pleading voice she said, “Mo-om, what should I do?” She directed her phone towards a small, skinny, black and white puppy hiding beneath a car. “I can’t just leave him here.”
“Have you checked the house to see if he belongs to them?”
“They say no one in the neighborhood knows him. He was likely a ‘drop off.’ They tried to feed him, but no one has been able to touch him.”
I watched as my daughter tossed treats to the puppy. Each time, he inched out from under the car, grabbed the treat, then quickly retreated. Bit by bit, she shortened the distance of her tosses until the pup was close to her feet.
I suggested she try picking him up, which she did, all eight pounds of him. The second he was in her arms, he began licking her face as if to say, “Oh thank goodness! You are my person!”
My daughter contacted the shelter and volunteered to foster the pup. It took less than 24 hours for her to change her intention from fostering to adopting. Little Roo, perhaps the luckiest dog on the planet, is now my sixth granddog.
It was only after naming Roo that my daughter witnessed how truly kangaroo-like he is, as attested to in the video below.
Roo is the definition of adorable. Being with him feels like an intravenous infusion of dopamine. He’s come a long way in a very short time. Gone are the fleas, his worry about people is diminishing, his “sit” command is solid, and his house training… well that’s a work in progress.
Best of all, big sister Frida and big brother Tupelo have taken him under their wing. It’s a beautiful thing!
As different as my three kids are, thank goodness they all love dogs!

What an amazing human your daughter is. The video of Roo hop-hop-hopping through the grass is absolutely priceless. He definitely found his person.
