Support the Organizations Rescuing Hurricane Animal Victims
Thinking of donating goods, time, and/or money to help animals displaced by Hurricanes Milton and Helene? Thinking of becoming a foster family?
Here’s a partial list of organizations that could use your support. All of them have very strong ratings with Charity Navigator.
The ASPCA is recognized for its monumental animal rescue capabilities following natural disasters. I was part of one such relief effort on St. Croix following Hurricane Rita. Talk about a well-oiled machine.
HSUS (Humane Society of the United States) Emergency Animal Relief Fund. Since the hurricanes touched down, they’ve gathered up hundreds of animals in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Florida. Shoutout to HSUS for their ceaseless efforts combatting puppy mills (my soapbox issue).
The International Fund for Animal Welfare has post-hurricane teams on the ground, supporting animals and communities in need.
The Asheville Humane Society escaped damage, but is now dealing with huge numbers of displaced animals.
Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, also in Asheville, North Carolina, did not fare as well as the Humane Society. Their entire physical plant was destroyed. Fortunately, before the hurricane hit they successfully evacuated all of their animals into temporary or long-term foster situations. I lived in a small town near Asheville for 10 years and met hundreds of dogs and cats adopted from Brother Wolf. In fact, my daughter adopted Tupelo, my granddog, from there. Tipper, another of my granddogs, was a Hurricane Katrina rescue.
Best Friends Animal Society has been working to support affected animal shelters and rescue groups deal with the influx of displaced pets.
Don’t forget your local animal shelters! For the past few years, most have been filled to capacity, and then some. Now, they’re trying to make room for victims of Helene and Milton.
Do you recommend any other hurricane animal relief large organizations or shelters? If so, please post them in the comments.
I send a huge hug of thanks for anything you decide to do.
Best wishes to you and your four-legged family members for abundant good health,
Dr. Nancy
